Cat Animation
Description:
This animation project was meant to bring humor and creativity to life. In this endeavor, I sought to showcase my animation skills while adding a touch of playfulness and light-heartedness to an otherwise mundane scene – a cat throwing up.
Objective:
The primary objective of this project was to demonstrate my proficiency in character animation and storytelling. While it may seem like an unconventional choice of subject matter, I saw an opportunity to challenge myself and create something truly unique, memorable, and engaging.
Concept:
Inspired by my friend’s cat who always seems to vomit on the floor, I decided to craft a short, looping animation featuring a cat throwing up. The initial goal was to create only a gif but I found that adding sounds added more personality to the animation and conveyed the more humorous outcome I was going for.
Execution:
The animation process involved several key steps, each carefully tailored to breathe life into the cat character:
1. Character Model: I scoured the internet trying to find a free cat model that was already rigged and looked the part for my vision. The chosen model was simple yet endearing, allowing for smooth and captivating animation.
2. Storyboarding: A concise storyboard was created to outline the cat’s journey, ensuring a coherent sequence of events.
3. Animation: Employing industry-standard animation software, I meticulously brought the cat to life with fluid movements and exaggerated expressions. I carefully incorporated anticipation, squash and stretch, and other principles to enhance the character’s appeal.
4. Sound Design: To add an extra layer of realism and immersion, I sourced and integrated fitting sound effects.
Challenges:
While the concept itself was light-hearted, the project posed some unique challenges. One of the key hurdles was getting the animation down for a quadrupedal model, especially a cat. I had only animated bipedal models before so this was especially challenging. I watched many videos of cats walking.
Outcome:
This project resulted in an entertaining and captivating animation that delighted my classmates and professor.
Takeaways:
This project allowed me to showcase my animation skills and storytelling abilities. It underscored my commitment to injecting creativity and humor into my work, making it both engaging and enjoyable for the audience.
